History of Mau’umae Beach

Mau’umae is part of the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail. This 175-mile “trail by the shoreline”, according to the National Park Service, connects storied landscapes, ancient Hawaiian sites, and more than 200 early Hawaiian land divisions.

At the southern end of the beach is a private estate with an extraordinary history. It was once the beach home of Hartwell Carter, Parker Ranch manager in the early 1900s. The property then became the exquisite estate of the Matson Roth family of San Francisco, heirs of the Matson Navigation Co. It is currently owned by a private family.

Seclusion and Tranquility

Mau’umae is tucked into a cove, so the ocean tends to be calmer than other Kohala Coast beaches. The sand is soft and white. It makes for quite a tranquil setting, which is such a special experience in the Hawaiian Islands. Early in the morning would be your best chance of having the entire beach to yourself, for a bit of time at least.

Activities

Swimming in Mau’umae’s calm waters is a lovely experience. You could bring a floaty to bob on the water or go snorkeling to see which tropical fish you can spot near the rocky ends of the beach.

Bring some refreshments or a picnic to enjoy. It’s a quiet beach, so a beach read would also be a great option.

Amenities

Since Mau’umae is secluded, there are no amenities. Everything you bring in, you will also need to carry out.

Before walking to Mau’umae, I recommend using the restroom when you park at Spencer Beach Park.

After Mau’umae, you can do all of your post-beach tasks at Spencer. There are trash receptacles, for example, as well as outdoor showers to rinse off.

Safety Tips

Occasionally in the winter, there can be large wave events on the Kohala Coast. Avoid swimming if there are giant swells. There is not a lifeguard at this beach.

There won’t be shade at this beach until the trees grow back, so be sure to protect your skin from the intense tropical sun.

Mau’umae closes at sunset. It gets dark quickly. It’s best to get an early start back to Spencer.

Location and How to Get There

Mau’umae Beach is located on the Kohala Coast, between Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and Spencer Beach.

Access to Mau’umae is through Spencer Beach Park’s parking lot, open 7:00am-8:00pm.

Enter “Spencer Beach Park” in your phone map app (62-3461 Kawaihae Rd, Waimea). Upon arrival at Spencer, drive as far south in the parking lot as possible. Park and look for signs to Mau’umae Beach / Ala Kahakai Trail. Walk 10 minutes to Mau’umae Beach.

Note: Limited walk-in access was previously available through Mauna Kea resort, however, the 2023 wildfire destroyed the access bridge. At the time of writing, Google Maps still shows access through Mauna Kea. Remember to go to Spencer Beach for parking.

Direct flights change regularly due to seasonal demand. At certain times of the year, you may find direct flights to/from Japan, Alaska, and Western Canada. There are many direct flights to major airports in the western United States. These flights can shift for some airports so it’s worth checking if your home airport is a direct option even if you haven’t seen it in the past.

Indirect Flights to/from Kona Airport

Honolulu is the major airport in the State of Hawaii. HNL connects Hawaii to all corners of the world. Often flights to/from the Big Island route through HNL. Occasionally, Maui (OGG) may also be a layover airport.

Inter-Island Flights to/from Kona Airport

It is so much fun to visit more than one Hawaii island on a vacation. You might want to land on Oahu for a few days, then take a quick inter-island flight to the Big Island. Or you may want to enjoy both the Big Island and Maui. It adds depth and adventure to experience more than one island if you have the time.

Getting to & from KOA

Ground Transportation

Ground transportation options are limited on the Big Island, so reserve your ground transport early. There are many things to see and experience on the Big Island, but they are very spread out. You are going to need a car. Parking is easy wherever you go.

Rental car companies at KOA include Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Thrifty and Turo. Rideshare services (Lyft, Uber) are available on a limited basis; I wouldn’t visit the island and plan for a ridesharing app to get me everywhere on the island.

Alternatively, your resort concierge can help you schedule car service or a shuttle to/from the airport and tours for sightseeing.

Facilities and Services at Kona Airport

Kona is a tiny, open-air airport. There are 10 (walk out to the airplane on the tarmac) gates split across 2 small terminals.

Check-In and Security

KOA is relatively quick to get through, mostly because it’s so small. Regular TSA and TSA PreCheck lines are available.

Food, Dining, and Retail

I recommend that you eat before you go to the airport. If you have a specific diet, be sure to bring your food and snacks with you. There is one restaurant in each of the two terminals, both named Laniakea Cafe. They have some warm options like burgers and hotdogs.

There are a couple of newsstands that carry snacks like a convenience store would.

There is a gift shop in each terminal.

Arrivals & Departures

KOA is a ground-level airport, so passengers board the airplane by walking across the tarmac from the terminal and then up a ramp.

The terminal is all open air and very fast to walk through.

Kona is a great little airport that is so easy to travel through. The amenities are very limited, so bring everything specific that you may want with you. Going through an open-air airport is a fun experience and fitting of a tropical adventure.

The Taj Mahal, Machu Picchu, or Angkor Wat might be on your list of interesting destinations to see one day; they are significant sights that would define your trip. However, anywhere you travel will have historical sights to see and enjoy. It’s fun to seek them out.

I usually think of active out-and-about activities as fun, but for those needing some significant downtime, focusing on wellness may be just the quiet enjoyment they seek and need. Spa Days, Wellness Retreats, Beach Relaxation, Exercise Classes, Resort Gyms, and Massages are all great ways to have you feeling rejuvenated upon your return home.

Shopping and Local Markets

For people living in small towns and remote areas, shopping in a city while traveling can be such a treat. Exploring Local Boutiques, Shops, and Markets can be great fun in experiencing a place.

Water Activities

Whether you are going to a lake or a beach, fun out on the water is always so much fun! Snorkeling or Scuba Diving, Jet Skiing, Sailing or Boating, Body Boarding, Paddleboarding … the list goes on. Anytime you reserve some fun out on the water it is a fun and memorable day.

That way, the fun on each trip will be unique and tailor-made for you.

Scheduled vs Unscheduled vs Relaxation

These three elements need to be in balance (your own uniquely determined sense of balance) for your vacation to function well.

“How was your vacation?” people ask. No matter the answer, many trips fade into the past tapestry of our lives as a vague memory.

But what about your handful of truly exceptional trips that leave you overflowingly fulfilled? Travel Memories That Continue To Feed My Soul

Some of my most meaningful journeys had different enrichment traits, but they were all deeply fulfilling to me.

On one trip, my husband and I went on vacation to Rome, Florance, and a driving tour of Tuscany. We loved witnessing the ancient ruins, seeing the works of art in person that we had studied in art history class, and tasting the wine unique to each Tuscan village. We look back on that vacation with blissful memories of our souls enriched.

Another travel experience that has forever enhanced my life is my study abroad program in foreign correspondence at the Danish and Dutch schools of journalism. I learned so much about the world that year, gained perspectives so different from any I had encountered and made friendships that have been joyfully vibrant and continue to enrich my life to this day.

Travel Memories That Had Me Less Than Fulfilled

I’ve also had some travel experiences that were the opposite of fulfilling.

For instance, the time I went on a solo trip to Barcelona. It was in the last days of my 29th year. I was caught off guard that I had outgrown the youth hostel culture that I so loved in my early 20s and found it to be a bit awkward. I still had some fun times, but it made me realize that I needed to have a travel focus going forward that matched my life stage.

There was another trip after I was married with a toddler. We met up with another family for a long weekend away. My husband and I wanted different things (he wanted to lay by the pool the entire extended weekend and I wanted to go out and explore the area). That made it very difficult to coordinate with the other family who also had their own things that they wanted to do. I was so incredibly sad that I did not reach my top soul-nourishing experiences of connection with others and exploring vibrant new places. I learned how important it is to communicate ahead of time with traveling companions to make it a wonderful shared experience.

What Makes Travel Meaningful and Fulfilling?

Fulfilling Experiences

What is it to feel fulfilled in our lives anyway? Several definitions appear in an internet search for “fulfilling” and “fulfilled”. According to Merriam-Webster and Oxford Languages fulfilling means …

• experiencing happiness or satisfaction

• meeting a need or desire, such as achieving something you’ve always wanted

• feeling satisfied through fully developing one’s abilities or character

Applying these “feeling fulfilled” definitions to travel quickly brings to light to make the most of our life journeys:

Experiencing Happiness Or Satisfaction

Take some time ahead of your trip to consider what experiences will make you feel fulfilled, bringing you the most happiness and satisfaction in this specific season of your life. Reflecting and getting clear on your unique desired experiences before you make travel plans, or at least before your departure, will support you in enjoying the vacation that you truly need.

Maybe, upon reflection, you realize that a quiet ultra-lux setting to unplug, relax, and recharge will most feed your soul — so you seek out a beautiful, quiet oasis for accommodations with a gorgeous spa and healthy vibrant food. Maybe, you are feeling sluggish and burnt out and think an engaging, active experience is just the ticket — so you seek out destinations that have lots of options for outdoor adventures. Identifying your unique desires at this specific point in your life will make all of the difference in a vacation well-spent and thoroughly enjoyed.

Meeting A Need Or Desire, Such As Achieving Something You’ve Always Wanted

I instantly think of a “bucket list”. I instantly envision someone with a list of places they’ve always wanted to see and activities they’ve always wanted to do. What an incredible gift to yourself to keep a unique list of experiences that will mean the most to you in this lifetime.

Feeling Satisfied Through Fully Developing One’s Abilities Or Character

Developing one’s abilities and character is based on one’s unique interests and joyful curiosities. There are so many enriching options while traveling, depending on who you are and what you love. You could take a French cooking class during your trip to France. Take a race car driving lesson. Learn to surf. Try the next level of a sport that you love. There are so many options and they are experiences that will pop out in your memory as fully participating in your life and helping to make it truly amazing.

Gratitude

Gratitude is not a definition of “fulfilling” like in the sections above. However, feeling gratitude in integral to feeling fulfilled, and will help you notice the little details and moments that become fulfilling experiences. While you are on your trip, noticing and feeling gratitude for all of the things that are going well, no matter how small, will bring a beautiful light to our journeys. Especially if your logistics are going quite as expected, making it a point to notice the joy around you will make a big difference in how you remember your time away.

Meaningful Experiences

Working in tandem with “fulfilling travel” is “meaning travel”. You drive across the state or the country … now what? How do you find meaning there?

Meaningful is defined as:

• full of significance, purpose, or value

• having a serious, important, or useful quality or purpose

• (or simply) having meaning

Applied to travel, meaningful experiences are therefore based on an individual’s values… what’s important to you, and what brings a sense of purpose to your life? Below we look at externally finding meaning out in the world as well as finding meaning within through personal, internal growth while traveling.

Cultural Immersion and Authentic Connections

Isn’t this one of the best things? To have friends and connections across the globe. To have friends and connections that speak different languages and live life in an entirely different way, while still sharing an inter-personal relatedness with you.

Even remembering people who briefly touched your life during your travels can bring a sense of wonder and a smile to your face.

Engaging with local cultures while traveling offers a transformative experience that goes beyond mere sightseeing. It involves immersing yourself in the traditions, customs, and daily life of the community, fostering a deeper understanding of the destination. Learning about different ways of life becomes a journey of discovery, as you gain insights into the unique perspectives and practices that shape local identities.

Some examples of cultural immersion are participating in a tea ceremony in Japan, attending a Day of the Dead celebration in Mexico, eating at the hawker markets in Singapore, enjoying an informative port tasting session in Portugal, and paddling an outrigger canoe in Hawaii. By striking up conversations with those around you, during these cultural immersion opportunities, you will be amazed at how much more you enjoyed them.

Personal Growth and Unique Experiences

There are so many occasions when we simply want to get out of town and enjoy the broader world. After many months of intensive work, we seek expanded experiences to feel fulfilled. After a painful life event, it can be so helpful to get out of town for a bit to help with the healing process. Celebrating joyous events also prompts travel like honeymoons, retirement trips, or milestone birthday trips.

Traveling is a powerful catalyst for personal growth. It encourages individuals to step out of their comfort zones and embark on transformative journeys.

When travelers engage in this mindful approach, they not only discover the beauty of the world but also unravel the layers of their own selves. I love to bring a journal with me to record my thoughts and capture my experiences. It’s a great way to feel connected to myself and fulfilled after the trip.

Unique experiences while traveling also add texture and depth to our lives. I will always remember night diving with manta rays of the Kona Coast in Hawaii, the packs of wild dogs running through the streets of Bucharest, riding bikes with friends along the canals of Utrecht, my son’s first trip to Disneyland, and boating in British Columbia. I have so many travel memories like this that I cherish.

Before moving to Hawaii full-time in 2020, I would pack a massive suitcase full of outfits and shoes. Then, after arriving, I wondered why I brought it all. Time and again, I had such a challenge switching from city thinking to vacay mode when packing, and I would bring way too much.

In this guide, I will share with you the best breathable fabrics and clothing styles for Hawaii’s warm, humid climate, key items to bring, and some essential clothing items for sun safety too. I’ll help you leave the excess at home and pack clothing that you actually want to wear.

Fabric Makes All The Difference When Dressing For Hot, Humid Weather

Humidity already makes the air feel sticky; the wrong fabrics can make it worse by steamily sticking to your skin. Lightweight, loose-fitting breathable fabrics will allow for airflow and sweat evaporation, both of which help keep you cool.

Breathable fabrics are ideal for tropical weather

Lightweight Cotton

Lightweight cotton is a great option for feeling breezy-cool in warm weather. Cotton is absorbent, so be sure the fabric is thin enough to allow sweat to evaporate and dry quickly. I have loose-weave cotton sundresses and blouses, both comfortable options.

Linen

I just bought a linen-blend kaftan pool coverup and it is divine. I instantly understood why linen is recommended for hot weather and I will be seeking out more. It was the feeling of having my skin protected from the direct sunlight while also allowing the breeze to blow right through.

Moisture-Wicking Fabrics

Workout clothes and activewear are usually tight-fitting and snug, however tight, sweat-drenched clothes in hot humid weather can be miserable. Wearing moisture-wicking activewear pulls sweat away from your body to the surface and allows it to quickly evaporate and dry …fantastic for a beautiful jog along the coast, a hike in Volcanoes National Park, or an outdoor yoga class on the resort’s lawn.

Other breathable fabrics

I’ve read that Modal, Tencel (Lyocell), Viscose, Chambray, Seersucker, Bamboo, and Mesh Knit fabrics are breathable and comfortable in hot weather, but I have yet to try wearing these fabrics in heat/humidity.

Fabrics To Avoid

In general, leave the plastic-like (an easy way to remember) fabrics at home. Fabrics such as Polyester, Nylon and Acrylic don’t breathe well and can trap both heat and moisture, making for quite an uncomfortable experience.

Comfortable Styles For Your Island Activities

Most people come to Hawaii to relax and get into the easy flow of island life. Keep this vision in mind as you plan your clothing. For example, a relaxed-cut breezy dress can welcome a relaxed mindset while a tight-waisted number can have you sucking it in and feeling, well, uptight. I would encourage you, whatever your style, to go with flowy, stretchy, loose-fitting, forgiving outfits … so you can do the same during your visit.

Restoring R&R

Casual yet beautiful, easy-going sundresses might be just the thing if your vacation goal is to simply relax and unwind at the resort during the day … or maybe a linen shirt with shorts, a pretty water-friendly pair of sandals, a sunhat, and sunglasses. Hawaii is very casual, so lightweight, breathable, and easy to wear is ideal.

Ocean Adventures

In addition to a packable pool/beach bag, you might also pack a waterproof phone case or waterproof pouch to bring a few items out on the water with you (make sure you have it secured to yourself). Bringing your own snorkel and mask will save rental fees and ensure a better fit. You will need reef-friendly sunscreen when swimming in the ocean.

On Land Adventures

Packing specific clothing for outdoor adventures is particularly relevant on the Big Island, not only because the nature is so diverse, but also because shopping is so limited for any forgotten items. For example, closed-toed shoes are needed for walking across lava (I had to go try to find a pair on my first visit to the Big Island and it was such a waste of valuable vacation time.) There are some amazing horseback riding tours that warrant long pants. Going stargazing on the Mauna Kea summit, at 13,000+ feet, will require significant layers to stay warm (there’s snow up there during the winter months).

Each island has an abundant array of outdoor adventures, so pack accordingly. Bring a packable backpack/daypack and a lightweight rain jacket if you have any on your itinerary.

Evening

After a day of relaxing fun in the sun, it feels amazing to shower off and get dressed for dinner. However, you won’t need to stuff yourself into anything formal. Fine dining restaurants list Resort Casual for their dress code.

Men usually wear casual collared shirts like aloha shirts or a short-sleeved button-up with a nice pair of shorts or lightweight pants. Women can dress up a versatile day dress with nice jewelry and accessories; remember a light sweater or wrap in case the cool air is blowing down the mountain. For a luau, it can be fun to wear aloha attire or some fun Hawaiian accessories.

Shoes

Flip-Flops (High-Quality for Extensive Walking)

First and foremost in your shoe packing priorities is a high-quality pair of flip-flops (aka “slippers” in Hawaii). Select a supportive pair with a cushiony sole. Make sure that the materials are soft (won’t rub blisters) and water resistant.

Dressy / Fun Sandals

You can easily wear a nice-looking pair of flip-flops with your dinner dress if you are packing super light, but sandals are so small, that it would be easy to slip a pair of dressy or fun sandals in your suitcase.

Sneakers / Athletic Shoes

Considering your activities on your trip will determine what type/style of sneakers to bring. At a minimum, you will want some cute sneakers for going on longer day excursions like extensive shopping or long walks. Opt for a more athletic pair if you intend on doing nature hikes or intensive cardio sessions.

Sun-Safety Clothing

Cover up if you are planning significant time at the beach or out enjoying water sports! The UV Index reaches the Very High and Extreme classifications for most of the year.

I have a water-friendly visor, for example, and a long-sleeved swimshirt (aka rashguard) that I wear over my swimsuit while paddleboarding. Below are more sun-protective clothing items to consider.

UPF Clothing

Pack clothes with an Ultraviolet Protection Factor for added sun protection, especially if you will be out doing activities in the midday (when the sun’s rays are the strongest) or out for an extended amount of time.

Wide-Brimmed Hats

Skip the narrow visors and slim-brimmed fedoras. The sun is strong early and late in the day when the sun comes in at an angle, and blazing midday when the sun is overhead. Wide-brimmed hats will protect more of your face for a longer amount of time. I like to get hats with a strap to keep them firmly in place in the trade winds (securing the strap back underneath my hair instead of my chin for added comfort).

Sunglasses

UV-protective sunglasses will protect your eyes from the sun as well as glare off of the sand and water. Bring a polarized pair for activities out on the water, to make sealife extra visible.

Long-Sleeve Swim Shirts (Rash Guards)

I like to wear a long-sleeved swimshirt over my swimsuit when the sun is the brightest.

What Not To Bring

If you pack these items, once you get to Hawaii, you will wonder why.

High Heels

Along the lines of your relaxing, easy-going vacation, wear shoes that help you feel that way. Sandals with a dress for dinner will look lovely.

Jeans

Maybe for the evening or for horseback riding. Otherwise, you will not want to touch them during the day.

Dry Clean Only Clothes

Unless you are in Hawaii for a special event, leave “dry clean only” garments at home.

Pack light. As I mentioned at the beginning, once you are in Hawaii, you won’t want to deal with a lot of stuff. Everyone is so easygoing and casual here. Packing a versatile capsule wardrobe with an additional few special, fun items, will be the easiest to manage. Height

The world’s tallest mountain is located here: the dormant, yet truly majestic Mauna Kea volcano. It rises more than 33,000 ft from the ocean floor and more than 13,000 ft above sea level.

Variety

Wet side/dry side, jungle/desert, … these terms generalize the Big Island’s natural landscapes. A fascinating closer look reveals that 10 of Earth’s 14 climate zone categories are found here, including alpine snow.

It’s Spacious

Unlike the urban highrise hotels of Honolulu and the tightly-packed resorts on Maui lined up like piano keys along a single beach, resorts on the Island of Hawaii are spacious and expansive. Each resort on the Kohala coast, for example, has rolling lawns and only one resort per beach cove.

The best time of year to visit

Considerations for timing your Hawaiian vacation include high season (number of people and cost), sun index/temperature, and surf height.

High Season

The table below demonstrates Hawaii Island’s Average Daily Visitor Census, with the high-season months in bold. For context, Oahu’s average tourist count for high-season months is well over 100,000 and Maui is in the 70,000s range, and they are significantly smaller islands.

Most tourists visit Hawaii during the holidays and summer break, as you can see in the chart below. Since the chart below has average monthly data, it doesn’t show that there are short peaks in February for ski week, in April for spring break, and in November for Thanksgiving; if you notice a bump in airline and accommodation pricing during these particular weeks that’s why.

Temperature & Sun Index

The weather in Hawaii is pleasant year-round. Summer can get hot with humid upper 80s / low 90s temperatures. Winter temperatures are lovely and warm in the humid upper 70s.

You will instantly feel how intense the sun’s rays are in Hawaii because of how much closer it is to the equator than the continental US. Average UV rays range between High, Very High, and Extreme depending on the season. Take great care with sun protection while visiting the Big Island. You may want to visit during the winter months if you are sensitive to the sun.

Surf

Waves tend to be larger during the winter months. Big kids might love this for boogie boarding. If you have small children, I recommend booking accommodations with a pool during the winter months.

The ideal length of your visit

Long Stays

I have found that longer stays, more than a week, offered me more time to unwind and get into the slower pace of island life. 10 days was the sweet spot for me.

I enjoyed going to two islands during my vacations. We would first go to either Oahu or Maui to get into the rhythm of the islands and then end with the super slow Big Island. Including two island experiences on one trip added so much depth, adventure, and variety to our vacations.

Short Stays

People tend to approach travel to Hawaii as a long vacation destination, with visits averaging 8-10 days according to the Hawaii Dept of Business, Economic Development & Tourism. If you live in the western US though, finding a great price on a direct flight makes a quick trip to the islands easy and so fun. It’s a quick adventure, a quick thaw, a quick reset. Booking a luxurious massage and a lovely meal on your first day or two can expedite your shifting into vacation mode.

Activity Ideas For A Memorable Visit To The Big Island

Ocean Fun

Hapuna Beach

Hapuna Beach frequently makes notable beach lists around the world. Located on the Kohala Coast, it has a lot to offer family members of all ages. Its swells are super fun for bobbing in the ocean as well as bodyboarding. Hapuna, being approximately half a mile in length and quite wide, offers plenty of room for visitors to spread out. Ample parking, showers, and bathrooms make it easily accessible for an extended time enjoying the beach. Bring snacks and drinks with you. Visit in the morning for shade near the rocks to the right of the public entrance.

Paddleboarding

Paddleboarding is such an easy fun way to be out on the water, and you can make it as relaxing or sporty as you like. I use our paddleboards more like canoes, sitting/kneeling while paddling. My son is skilled at standing up to paddle and loves to see how fast he can go. Some hotels offer paddleboard yoga; talk about core building! For me, the fun is simply being out on the water and leisurely paddling around.

Bodyboarding (Boogie Boarding)

Have big kids and want to offer them hours of fun? Boogie boards are a fantastic solution. Go out with them to show them the basics and then watch them go, and go and go. Rentals are readily available at hotels and rental shops.

Snorkeling

Ever dream of swimming in turquoise water surrounded by beautiful tropical fish? You will find great joy in snorkeling on the Big Island. This can be as simple as going swimming in the ocean with your snorkel set or as adventurous as going on a snorkeling boat tour.

Manta Ray Night Snorkel

Night snorkeling with manta rays is an experience that you will remember for a lifetime. Boats leave from Kona around sunset, and motor up the coastline. Non-swimmers can enjoy the show from the boat. Snorkelers get in the water and, facing downward, hold onto a giant ring that looks like a hula hoop. Scuba participants anker to the bottom and face upward. Underwater lights attract plankton, which brings the giant, graceful manta rays swimming towards you. They do underwater barrel rolls as they eat the plankton, going around and around with their slow-moving wingspan of 10 to 20+. Few places on earth offer this experience, so I highly recommend these tours during your visit.

Whale Watching

The best time to see whales is during the winter months (December-March). You can frequently spot whales breaching while you are sitting on a North Kona Coast or Kohala Coast beach enjoying a view of the water. No need for binoculars, you can simply look for large splashes offshore. It is a joy to witness.

Even more phenomenal is experiencing whales up close on a whale-watching boat tour. Both of the tours I’ve taken were out of Kawaihae (Kohala Coast) and we had great luck and saw so many whales close to the boat.

Outdoor Adventures – Ka’u

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

If you enjoy natural wonders, Volcanoes National Park will be such a treat for you. It’s a relatively small park, so it’s easy to see the sights in a day. The steam vents and Thurston Lava Tube are short walks and are such a mind-blowing wonder. For a longer (3.5 miles), challenging hike (due to a 400ft descent down the crater and then back up the other side), walking across the hardened lava lake of the Kīlauea Iki crater hike is such a uniquely Big Island activity. Nearby Kilauea erupts on occasion, and if it happens to be during your visit, you are in for a bucket list experience.

Black Sand Beach

Oh, to sink your toes in the sand. Something we’ve all enjoyed from our earliest memories. But black sand? That’s unique! Punaluʻu Beach is close to Volcanoes National Park, so it would be easy to combine visiting these natural wonders. You can also enjoy the black sand beach in Waipio Valley if you choose to do a valley tour there.

Outdoor Adventures – Hamakua Coast

Waipio Valley

Waipio Valley is truly a sight to behold. Located on the gorgeous Hamakua Coast, the lush, tropical vegetation creates a truly enchanting landscape next to the black sand beach and sapphire blue sea. This tranquil valley was highly valued by the Hawaiian people, its water supporting a variety of farms as a food source. It was home 1000s until the devastating 1946 tsunami. The valley floor has since become an off-the-grid destination.

You can easily drive to the Waipio Valley Lookout and take in a birdseye view. If you want to go beyond the lookout and down into the valley, you will need to go with a tour. We went on a horseback riding tour and it was a special experience that I cherish to this day.

Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve and Garden

Walking through the rainforest of these botanical gardens will round out your Island of Hawaii experience, especially if your accommodations are on the island’s dry side. The trails aren’t particularly long. However, walking among the tropical plants with views of the ocean is an enriching island experience. Be sure to take the Scenic Route (Old Mamalahoa Rd in Papaikou).

Outdoor Adventures – Kohala

Horseback Riding

Not many people associate cattle ranches when thinking of Hawaii, but the Big Island has a long tradition of cattle and cowboys (Paniolos). A significant portion of the island is ranch lands. A trail ride is a great opportunity to experience this part of Big Island life.

Pololū Valley Lookout

The Pololu Valley Lookout offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views on the island. The view in and of itself is a joy. If you want to get your blood flowing, you can do the moderately challenging hike down to the valley floor and back up (about a mile roundtrip, with 344ft in elevation, and will take about an hour).

Cultural Experiences

Pu’uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park

Visiting Pu’uhonua O Hōnaunau offers a historic glimpse into the life of the Hawaiian people, before the arrival of explorers’ ships. Some of the most important traditional Hawaiian sites can be found here, a place that served as a religious and political center for centuries. To this day, it remains an active cultural site for the Hawaiian people.

Petroglyphs

Always fascinating to have a direct link to people so many generations ago, the petroglyphs are a joy to explore and discover. The petroglyph trails are very easy to access and are located near the Waikaloa Beach area hotels and the Mauna Lani area hotels. They are easy to drive to, or if you are staying in the area, the petroglyph trails can be a nice morning walk with a unique view of Hawaiian history.

The Mauna Kea Luau

My favorite place on the island is the Mauna Kea resort. Everywhere you stand on this property offers a postcard-worthy view. On one of its many expansive lawns, overlooking its jewel of an ocean cove is the Mauna Kea Luau. It’s a multi-faceted cultural experience where you can enjoy food, music, dance and storytelling as the sun sets over the Pacific. Wear your aloha attire and enjoy this fun entertainment option during your Island visit.

Resorts With The Best Beaches

Mauna Kea

As a Bonvoy Autograph Collection hotel (“a global collection of distinctive independent hotels carefully crafted to leave a lasting imprint”), and a member of the Historic Hotels of America, Mauna Kea Resort offers a stay like no other. It is the Island of Hawaii’s first resort, envisioned and developed by Laurance S. Rockefeller in the 1960s. He designed the hotel to fit into the existing landscape and as a result, everywhere you go on the property feels like you are living in a postcard.

To this day, you can still feel the mid-century glamour in its joyfully updated contemporary design. Especially memorable experiences here are paddleboarding/kayaking, manta ray night snorkeling, and tennis at the seaside courts. The beach is the most beautiful on the island; you are in for a divine gift if you wake up in the early morning and take a barefoot walk in the sand.

Westin Hapuna

Westin Hapuna is a fantastic family hotel. It has a romantic feel to it too. I love Westin’s bedding and I could cozy up and enjoy the room the whole stay if it weren’t for the gorgeous, renowned beach and a pool with epic views beckoning me to come out and play. Piko Coffee & Bar is an open-air lounge with a panoramic ocean view on the central terrace where I love some alone time with a delicious coffee or cocktail depending on the time of day. The property has many features, but some notable to me are a specious, well-appointed gym and the super delicious Meridia restaurant.

Resorts With The Best Pools

The Fairmont Orchid

The Fairmont at nightime with the torches, … it is so pretty! This hotel is great for families and the rooms are pretty and welcoming. The Fairmont has a uniquely shaped pool as well as a small, protected beach cove. My children like to take paddleboards out in the cove, play in the pool and enjoy giant rainbow snowcones in the heat of the day.

Mauna Lani

Where do I start with this effortlessly lux Auberge resort? Mauna Lani is both sophisticated and causal, and will simultaneously inspire you and put you at ease. The pools (main pool, adult pool, and keiki pool) are delightful. The outdoor bar in the center of the property offers not only a picture-perfect view of the main pool and ocean beyond, but also delectable mixed drinks. The hotel’s Halani restaurant is one of my favorite places for lunch. Staying at the Mauna Lani will also provide a priority chance at CanoeHouse reservations (the top restaurant on the island); ask the concierge for CH reservations as soon as your hotel reservations are confirmed.

Four Seasons

The Four Seasons brand speaks for itself with its focus on impeccable service. What’s notable about this property is no dominating hotel tower. Instead, it’s a series of small bungalows and villas interwoven with walking paths, tropical gardens, and pools. I love to explore the property’s series of oases vignettes, revere the property’s fine finishes and details, and savor the fine cuisine. Beach Tree is one of my favorite spots on the island to dine.

Beyond VRBO and Airbnb, which are on the DIY side of things, there are some vacation rental offerings with highly desirable services and amenities to offer.

Notable features of the Hau Tree restaurant are that it’s right on the beach (the most beautiful beach on the island in my opinion) and also features a lawn to the side. Tips on making reservations

Make Dining Reservations ASAP

As soon as you book your accommodation reservation, call the resort’s concierge and ask if they can please book your dinner reservations for your upcoming trip. There is not an abundance of options, so this is particularly important during high-occupancy times and/or if you are traveling with a larger group.

For those of you staying in a vacation rental, make restaurant reservations a top priority after confirming your rental reservation. Another option for rentals, especially if you are a large group, is to have a private chef come to the house to prepare dinner for you.

Consider Early Dining Times

For timing, at the beginning of your trip, you may want to book on the early side to account for jet lag and also enjoy a magnificent sunset as you sip your champagne.

Getting There

Airports

There are two major airports on the Big Island, in Kona and Hilo. These airports are tiny with only a few shops, so if you have specific dietary needs for your return flight, I recommend you bring snacks with you to the airport.

Kona International Airport (KOA)

Kona International Airport is closer to the major resorts and tourist areas. All of the accommodations recommended below are in proximity to KOA.

Hilo International Airport (ITO)

Hilo is closer to Volcanoes National Park, but more than an hour away from major resorts. I recommend flying in or out of Hilo if you are beginning or ending your trip on the east side of the island, or if you found a Hilo airfare or car rental deal that makes it worth the long drive.

Ground Transportation

You will need a car. The Big Island is rural and spread out so if you want to get out and see the island and enjoy various beaches, activities and restaurants, a car is a must. Ask about self-parking vs valet at your hotel if you want to keep unnecessary costs down.

Practical Tips

Packing essentials

Pack the minimum amount of items for an easygoing time while also feeling well cared for and beautiful. I realize that this is easier said than done. This type of packing lands somewhere between an art (achieving effortless beauty with minimal items) and a skill (packing just the right items to care for yourself). I’d say a versatile capsule wardrobe with an additional couple of dresses for dinner will serve you well.

Here are some must-haves:

Hats

I always wear a hat during the day. As I mentioned above, the UV Index is either High, Very High or Extreme here so protect your face. (With abnormal cells on my nose teetering on becoming basal cells, I take it seriously.)

High-Quality Sunscreen

Obvious, but seriously. A very limited selection of sunscreen brands is available in shops so bring sunscreen with you if you have a specific brand that works for you.

Easy To Wear Clothing

There is no “scene” on the Big Island, so don’t bring a trunk of fitted fancy frocks that will have you melting in the humidity. Opt for lightweight, breathable cotton or linen which are both beautiful and easy to pack and wear.

Health and safety considerations

Medical Care Considerations

There are a few hospitals on the Big Island that handle a variety of emergencies. However, medivac small plane or helicopter flights to Oahu or Maui are sometimes necessary for cases that need specialist equipment and/or care. Also, if you need to be medically transported back to the mainland that is another level. Check with your health insurance provider about coverage in Hawaii and consider supplemental travel insurance if your current coverage doesn’t cover air ambulances.

Ocean Safety

Look for colorful beach flags (often yellow for medium hazard or red for high hazard) alerting people to current conditions; ask the lifeguard (or a local if you can’t find a lifeguard) for clarification. Many beaches will also have permanent warning signs with hazards for that particular location; be wise and heed the advice.

Sun/UV Safety

It’s not unusual to see tourists here with lobster-red sunburns; it’s painful to witness. One of my worst sunburns in Hawaii from sitting in the shade without sunblock; the UV rays ricocheted off the sand and water and my skin got fried. Moral: Apply sunblock before you go out so you know you are covered, and carry some with you.

Some sun protection tips I am careful to follow are based on American Academy of Dermatology Association recommendations:

• I sit in the shade at the pool or beach.
• I do outdoor activities in the morning or afternoon and seriously avoid being in the sun between the most intense midday hours of 10am-2pm.
• I always wear a hat.
• I invest in high-SPF, water-resistant, quality sunscreens and follow reapplication timing instructions
• I wear sunscreen even in the shade

After A Heavy Rain: River Runoff In The Ocean and Flash Floods On Trails

Ask your resort about ocean water quality if there are very heavy rains in the area. All sorts of things run downstream on heavy rain days such as manure from farms, fertilizers, oils from roads, small dead animals, and generally things that you don’t want to swim in.

Quieter places like Ko Olina are further afield on Oahu, with the gorgeous Four Seasons and Disney Aulani resorts. You still will land at a large airport and take a freeway to get there. There is beautiful nature to enjoy driving up to the Northshore and around the scenic coast of the island.

We have a super fun time getting our city fix when visiting Oahu.

Maui

Maui’s small size and tourist area proximity make the island easily accessible. I love all of the beach options. There are lovely resorts and shopping options. It’s highly developed for the tourist sector. I love gentle Maui.

I do feel shockingly crowded when I’m there because, while it’s not urban, it’s tight. If you love a see-and-be-seen vibe, lots of people, and plenty of restaurant and shopping options, Maui may be a fun option.

Island of Hawaii (Big Island)

The Island of Hawaii is vast, and the spacious expanse of each resort property that I recommended is immediately noticeable.

The island is open and warm with cooling trade winds. The pace is easy-going and slow.

There aren’t an overabundance of restaurant and hotel options, but the resorts I recommended are refined and beautiful. The island is large enough to make going out and exploring and doing activities a tropical adventure.

When we lived in the San Francisco Bay Area, I enjoyed starting Hawaiian vacations on either Oahu or Maui for a few days for more busy fun and then heading to the slower, spa-like Big Island for the rest of my trip. I like variety and adventure, and this approach also gave me some runway to slow down to the island life pace.

Have you been in this heartstopping situation before? You turn around for a moment and turn back to find your child missing. Frantically running around calling their name, having no idea which direction they’ve gone and how far they’ve gotten … it’s a true experience of terror.

While I have experienced losing eye contact with my children for a few petrifying moments at a time, the worst situation I witnessed was at a playground in Central Park NYC. A mom we had noticed arrive with two kids was all of a sudden screaming and desperately running through the playground begging for people’s help in finding her child, … “have you seen him?”. The boy was not on the playground. My husband and others ran to help; the police came. We needed to leave after about 20 minutes so I have no idea where or if she was reunited with her child. It was awful and my heart went out to her. This was 2019, before AirTags.

I was surprised at how much I liked using an air tag for kids

I thought the AirTags would simply offer peace of mind knowing that I could track our child’s location if an unexpected separation arose. However, I found the AirTags proactively tracked for me, which was such a nice service.

What are Apple AirTags?

An AirTag (aka air tag) is a little, round disk that looks like a beautiful coin, approx. 1.25” wide and 0.3” high.

AirTags emit a secure Bluetooth signal to the Apple Find My network, relaying the AirTag’s location to your Find My app on your phone where you can view/track its location.

How To Set Up Your AirTag?

Setting up the AirTags was really easy.

Set up the AirTag on Your Phone

The instructions are literally two steps:

1. Update to the latest iOS. Turn on Bluetooth.

2. Pull battery tab when ready to use. Hold near device and follow onscreen instructions.

Customize Name and Emoji

You give each AirTag you connect to your phone its own name and emoji. For my daughter, I wrote her name and picked a teddy bear emoji. For my son, with his name I picked a jack-o-lantern emoji because he loves Halloween. So fun! For tracking items, I could name an AirTag “Keys” with a key emoji for example.

Share The AirTag’s Tracking (optional)

Both my husband and I were with the children at Disneyland, so I wanted both of us to be able to track their AirTags. After upgrading to iOS 17, I was able to easily use the Share an AirTag feature. It’s really helpful that you can share (and then unshare as needed) tracking the children’s AirTags with family members.

Some Considerations Tracking Your Kids with AirTags

The battery, be careful.

Unlike most Apple products that have a rechargeable battery, AirTags use coin batteries. Apple includes a warning on its website: “AirTag, the battery cover, and the battery might present a choking hazard or cause other injury to small children. Keep these items away from small children.” Coin batteries, or button batteries, can cause serious health issues if swallowed. When you are changing the battery, keep track and dispose of it vigilantly with great care to keep it away from younger kids and pets.

My 3-year-old got tired of the wristband when it got wet

My 3-year-old wanted to take the wristband off when it got wet (a cloth elastic band). We moved it to her ankle, over her sock, and she was then fine with that. Soon, she wanted it back on her wrist. It was nice to have the versatility. There are waterproof wristband holders too that can be dried off quickly.

AirTags Need to be near Apple devices to work

AirTags are great for location tracking of your kids in populated settings, but not for getting lost in the remote wilderness. AirTags use a network of Apple devices, like an iPhone or Apple Watch, to ping for tracking. In a place like an airport, for example, there are 1000s of Apple devices in Bluetooth range to ping and securely track AirTags. However, in the remote wilderness, if AirTags don’t have any nearby Apple devices to ping, they cannot be tracked.

My Conclusion About AirTags for Kids’ Safety, and Other Uses

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked using AirTags at Disneyland. I now carry the 2 children’s wristbands in my purse so the kids can wear them if ever we are in a setting that feels distractingly busy. The peace of mind of knowing I can instantly and precisely track the children’s location is soothing and takes some stress off of my plate. I still watch them as carefully as I ever did. The ability to track them if we get unexpectedly separated is the game-changer.

I have attached the two AirTags I bought to track checked luggage to my child’s backpack and sports bag. My son can be forgetful, and it will save so much grief the next time one of these bags goes missing with irreplaceable homework and/or needed sports gear inside. (For our next trip, I will temporarily move them back to our luggage.)

I plan on buying more AirTags. One for each of our cars (which will allow us to easily find them in large, crowded parking lots, like the airport) and one to hang on our dear Golden Retriever’s collar (just in case).

If you want to rest your eyes and still pass the time, listening to a great book is made easy with Audible. There is a sleep timer too if you want to set the book to play for a short amount of time, while you nod off.

Kindle Paperwhite

Sometimes it’s nice to not be staring at my phone, again. The Kindle Paperwhite is the size of a paperback book and can be easily read in any brightness of light. Load all of the books you’ve been waiting to read and enjoy them on your flight and poolside too.

Tablet

If you want to stay connected, but don’t want to bring your laptop with you, a tablet is a great all-in-one solution for entertainment, social, and work too.

If you are using your tablet in place of bringing your laptop, getting a case that allows your tablet to stand upright and has a keyboard will allow for the most versatility for entertainment. Carry-On Tote Bags

With the many options out there, look for a lightweight tote bag or travel backpack, large enough to carry all of your items while small enough to easily fit under the seat in front of you. Packing make-up, toiletries, and drug store items is a refined art and can vary greatly whether you are taking a ladies’ trip to a spa or a family trip to Disneyland. I pack the children’s toiletry organizers and medicines before each trip.

Packing Cubes

I love packing cubes to organize my suitcase, but I also use small packing cubes in our carry-on bags to hold a change of clothes. A change of clothes is particularly important for parents and small children, as you can imagine the spills and accidents when a change of clothes would come in handy.

Tech Organizer

For a while, I was traveling with all of my charges and adapters in a baggie. Easy to pack, but a time-consuming puzzle to untangle wires when I needed them. I tech organizer keeps all of your chargers, adapters, etc. neatly stored and easy to access and put away. I go with a padded, soft-sided organizer so it packs easily and doesn’t take up too much space.

Plastic Bags

While I carefully minimize the use of plastic bags in everyday life, I do find them helpful on trips.

I like to bring a couple of gallon-sized ziplock bags in my carry-on. I feel more relaxed knowing that if there is some sort of spill or throw-up mess I can contain it neatly, put wet clothes in there, etc.

I also pack a few small trash bags for hotel rooms; inevitably we need plastic bags … our swimsuits are wet and we need to check out, we ordered take out and the containers are too big for the small in-room trash cans, I bought a pair of shoes on my travels and don’t have a shoe bag for them.

Stay Healthy

Lightweight Travel Water Bottle

I love our HydroFlasks for everyday life, but stainless-steel water bottles are too heavy for travel. We have lightweight travel water bottles for trips. We bring empty water bottles through security and find a filtered water bottle filling station after we are through, before our flight.

Snack Bags

I like to pack snacks for our trips. We end up with much healthier options and save a lot of money as opposed to purchasing airport food. To avoid taking our reusable containers or plastic baggies, using waxed paper, sealable sandwich and snack bags is just the ticket. They are eco-friendly and disposable while also durable and grease-resistant.

Protective Face Masks

It is so unnerving being stuck sitting next to someone on a flight who is hacking up a lung or sneezing and coughing for hours on end. Yuck! We always bring facemasks in our carry-ons.

Medicines

I bring a few tablets of key medicines with me on flights in case I need them. I can then easily address things like headaches, digestive issues, etc. I include ginger capsules to avoid motion sickness.

Child-Specific Medicines

Remember to include child-specific medicines in your carry-on medicine bag. For example, I carry a few chewable children’s painkillers/fever reducers, chewable children’s Pepto-Bismol, … any medicines that I would want in a pinch.

Humidifier

When traveling to a very dry climate, I highly recommend bringing a tiny travel humidifier. I’ll never forget our visit to Colorado and waking up in the middle of the night feeling so hungover even though I hadn’t been drinking. I was so dehydrated from the ultra-dry air.

Save your checklist templates in your favorite format. If you like paper, type out your list, save your Document as a template, and print it. If you prefer phone apps, create a template list in your favorite task or project management app and do a save-as for each new trip.

List items under category headings (such as carry-on tote items, clothing, toiletries, etc.) to organize your list and packing.

Also include a trip prep to-do checklist leading up to your trip (such as placing a mail hold, getting a pedicure, making a reservation for dog boarding, etc.).

Which travel accessories do I need?

Priority 1: Health and Safety. If there is one essential travel accessories category, it’s health and safety. Pack the minimum items necessary to take care of yourself well.

Priority 2: Comfort. This is particularly important for long trips to foreign lands. If you are hopping on a quick flight to a nearby familiar destination, you can pack light. Consider your destination’s climate in case you need to bring a travel umbrella or a sun hat or warm gloves.

Priority 3: Entertainment. Some people enjoy simply traveling with a book. I like to have a variety of entertainment options downloaded on my mobile device (movies and TV shows, an audiobook, an e-book, some work projects, etc.). For business trips, you may not need as many entertainment options.

Have I packed too much?

I need to have my carry-on tote under the seat in front of me so I can have easy access to it at any time (as opposed to stowed overhead), so I am mindful to keep it at a size that will fit.

You need to be able to easily lift, maneuver, and handle your bags on your own when you are traveling solo. Support your relaxation level by traveling compactly and packing light.

What are the carry-on packing restrictions?

For overall packing, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recommends that you verify your airline’s carry-on regulations before you pack, including the allowed number of bags and their maximum dimensions. In some circumstances, the airline may request that you check all of your luggage except your personal item, so be prepared for that scenario.

Specific to carry-on packing, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has specific rules for liquids. You may bring a quart-sized ziploc bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes in your carry-on bag. Each travel-sized container in the bag must be 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per. Containers larger than 3.4 ounces, regardless of the amount of liquid in the container, must go in checked baggage. The TSA 3-1-1 rule means 3.4 ounces – 1 quart-size bag – 1 bag per passenger. If you are traveling with your family of 4, you may distribute your liquids in 4 quart-size bags as needed, placing one bag in each person’s carry-on luggage.

What travel accessories are helpful for long flights and international travel?

I say pack a little more to support your travel experience and arrive as rested as possible. Consider the class of ticket and the amenities provided. If you are in Economy, bring whatever you can to make yourself comfortable. Going into Premium Economy, Business, and First incrementally increases the comfort level and amenities provided, so you won’t need to bring as much. Hopefully, my list above can inspire you to pack for comfort and rest while traversing the globe.
